Persecuted in Germany, the academic and writer Sartorius settled in Mexico in 1824 at his hacienda 'Mirador' in the province of Veracruz. His writings on Mexico include his Mexiko, Landschaftsbilder und Skizzen aus dem Volkslebert, Darmstadt, 1852, based on lectures given to the Geographical Societies of Darmstadt and Frankfurt from 1849 and illustrated by Rugendas, who had visited Sartorius at his sugarcane plantation 'El Mirador' during his travels in Mexico in the early 1830s.

For Sartorius's writings on Mexico, see J.E. Covarrubias, 'De Fossey y Sartorius en la Tierra de la Nostalgia' in Artes de Mexico, 31, pp. 48-55.
