A similar though slightly larger pair of bowls (15.2 cm. diam.) and bearing the same mark from the Clague Collection is illustrated in the Catalogue, p. 56, where the author suggests that the bowls may have been part of an Imperial birthday service.
The bronze is of 'bell quality' and especially heavily gilded.
The inscription gives the instruction: 'sons and grandsons forever treasure', 'a reference to the phrase which often concluded the inscriptions on Early Chou dynasty bronze, especially of the ninth century B.C.' Cf. Brown, Clague Collection, Catalogue, p. 122.
Other examples include one in the Staatliche Museum, Berlin, illustrated by Goepper, Kunst und Kunsthandwerk Ostasiens, pl. 258 and six in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, nos. 41.53.1 A-F.
(US$13,000-20,000)
