After the success of Wheatley's thirteen paintings for John Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery, Robert Bowyer planned a similar project to illustrate Hume's History of England. Accordingly, in 1792 Wheatley was commissioned to paint both the present lot and The Death of Richard II (whereabouts unknown), both of which were subsequently engraved.
Sold with a photocopy of a letter from Mary Webster, dated August 27, 1929, confirming the attribution to Wheatley.
