Joan Fontaine, born Joan de Havilland in Tokyo in 1917, moved to California at an early age with her mother and sister, actress Olivia de Havilland, to pursue an education, and ultimately, a career in acting. Following early roles opposite such established actresses as Joan Crawford and Katharine Hepburn, she attained great recognition for her portrayal of "I" de Winter in David O. Selznicks production of Rebecca, a role that also garnered her the first of several Academy Award nominations. Fontaine became the the youngest leading actress to win an Oscar for her work in her next film, Alfred Hitchcock's Suspicion (1941) in 1942. Throughout her career, Joan Fontaine, who changed her name on the advice of a fortune teller, starred opposite such venerable leading men as Carey Grant, Sir Laurence Olivier, Orson Wells, Fred Astaire, and Paul Newman, and made well over 45 films. These films include Island in the Sun, Jane Eyre, Tender is the Night, September Affair, and Letter from an Unknown Woman.
