The 1920's is often called the Roaring Twenties. It was a time when everyone stayed up until dawn, dancing to the latest music. Fashion changed radically, with short tunic dresses and plunging necklines becoming the rage. The silhouette of the body became long and flat, suppressing all curves. To accentuate the vertical line of the tubular dress, jewelry designers introduced long, dangling necklaces, influenced by the multi-strand models of the Indian Maharajahs. Long sautoirs were worn hanging down the back, over one shoulder or even wrapped around one leg. The illustrated necklace which hangs to the knees was designed in the style of those necklaces, a fashion that is still as sought after today as it was when it was introduced seventy years ago.
