Signed by David Webb

The David Webb name is synonymous with fine jewelry of the last half of the twentieth century. Originally offering abstracted designs in the polychromatic style of the 1950's, he introduced his now famous animal jewelry in the early 1960's, heralding a return to the use of figural forms in strong, brilliant colors. He created an assortment of animals, from bulls and frogs to an array of jungle animals. The illustrated bangles are part of this series. The lions are not of the wild African variety but are based on a Chinese version of the beast, probably taken from an image in a book from Webb's vast library. And, like their Chinese models, Webb's lions bear little detailed resemblance to the real animals, as the designer has taken full advantage of imaginative color and texture combinations.
