Simple ideas appeal to Joel Arthur Rosenthal, one of the most original jewelry designers working today. Working out of his atelier in Paris, he creates one-of-a-kind jewelry that defies the usual interpretation of jewelry as simply adornment. Knowledge acquired from studying art history at Harvard has provided him with the background to translate past ideas into a modern idiom. The three-dimensionality of his jewelry approaches sculpture: his creations are an art form that invites tactile as well as visual enjoyment.

The design of the illustrated ring is based on a simple knot with white diamonds sprinkled on the surface. A square-cut diamond draws the eye to the center, a visual technique based on the method of linear perspective as seen in early Renaissance painting. This ring was displayed in the exhibtion Rosenthal held on November 30,1987 at the National Academy of Design in New York City. Entitled A Collection of Jewels Created in Celebration of Our Ten Years in Place Vendome, it featured an array of jewels in a darkened room; the only sources of light were flashlights provided to each guest. The ring is item number 67 in the catalogue and is described as "entwined cords ring, of diamonds, with platinum and gold".
