This trellised, flowered and acanthus-wrapped frame, enriched with fretted, serpentined and asymmetrical scrolls together with Jove's eagle wing and Venus' scallop-shell badges, reflects the French picturesque manner of the 1730's, such as features in the table designs of Nicolas Pineau (d.1754), published in Mariette's L'Architecture Française (1727-38). However, the winged cartouche and fruiting acanthus flower can also be seen on consoles executed in Munich and Dresden in the 1760's, such as that supplied to the Residenz illustrated in G. Hojer and H. Ottomeyer, Die Möbel der Residenz München, Munich, 1996, II, no.62, pp.214-6.
A related console was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 3 July 1986, lot 106.
