The enduring popularity of the Commedia del'Arte genre was greatly enhanced by Goldoni in late 16th Century Venice. Like those manufactured in porcelain at the Meissen factory by Johann-Joachim Kändler in the mid-18th Century, these figures were probably inspired by Luigi Riccoboni's celebrated book of engravings, L'Histoire du Théâtre Italien, published in Paris in 1727.
