A PAIR OF SPANISH RED AND GILT-JAPANNED SIDE CHAIRS
First half 18th Century, in the manner of Giles Grendey
Each with back-scrolled toprail with flowerhead-filled trellis centred by a medallion with a scallop-shell, above a vase-shaped splat with a Chinese figure within foliage, the caned seat above a shaped seat-rail centred by a scallop-shell and flanked by flowers and on cabriole legs decorated with flowerheads and joined by an H-shaped stretcher and terminating in claw-and-ball feet, refreshments to the decoration, replacements to one seat-rail, possibly English (2)

Their basic pattern, with the addition of Jupiter's eagle-claw feet, relates to a celebrated George II suite of japanned and compass-fronted chairs exported to Spain by Giles Grendey (d. 1780) of Clerkenwell, London (C. Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House, Leeds, 1978, no. 61).
