Although this little figure is similar to the well-known genre of 'people at work', the offering of a miniature boat might suggest it was dedicated in a temple. At the Temple of Hera on Samos, a full-size boat as well as model boats have been found in the excavations; either they were dedicated to thank the goddesss for a safe voyage or to invoke her protection. Similar cult centres round the Aegean, including Perachora, would probably have received such ex-votos. For a stylistically similar figure cf. Higgins, pl. 36c
