An emblem of potency and power and symbol of the martial spirit, the cockerel represents the tenth year of the Zodiac. At the Grand Shrine of Ise it is regarded as a messenger of the Sun Goddess, and its crow at daybreak is believed to drive away the evil spirits of darkness.
