Born in Hunstanton in Suffolk, Southgate lived most of his life in East Anglia often living rough in a small tent, to observe the birds he painted at close quarters. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Society of British Artists 1904-12 and his work was used to illustrate several books on Wildfowling and East Anglia. Southgate was killed in action during the First World War.
