A MASTERPIECE BY PETRUS RUBAN 1851-1929, EXECUTED FOR ONE OF THE MOST DISCERNING PATRONS OF HIS TIME, ON ONE OF THE GREAT BOOKS OF THE BELLE EPOQUE. The edition limited to 500 special copies, this number 176, one of 50 copies on chine paper. The proofs are all, in effect, extra-illustrations and not required with this issue; also included is a 2pp. contemporary review from Le Bibliophile bound at the back. This edition is the first complete edition of Uchard's mildly erotic novel which had previously appeared, in a bowdlerised form, in the Revue des Deux-Mondes. Ruban, one of the most inventive bookbinders of his time, had established himself in Paris in 1879, but, overshadowed by his contemporary Henry Marius Michel, took some time before gaining the confidence of the most discerning contemporary collectors. He eventually retired in 1910, leaving a small but distinguished corpus.
