Please note that we are grateful to Hilary Underwood for kindly pointing out that contrary to Mrs Watt's listing of this picture in her manuscript catalogue as that exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1864, this painting was not in fact shown there. Although this is an early version of the subject, the Royal Academy picture was slightly larger.
