Titian

Tiziano Vecellio, ‘Titian’, was the greatest painter of the 16th-century Venice. Titian is renowned for his mastery of colour, composition and emotion in both portraiture and religious scenes. As a key figure in the Venetian school, Titian helped shape the course of Western art.

Titian was born in the late 15th century, in a village in the Dolomite foothills called Pieve di Cadore. He demonstrated an astonishing talent for art at an early age and was sent to Venice aged around 10. He apprenticed in the workshop of Giovanni Bellini, the city’s leading painter at the time. During this time, Titian was also greatly influenced by the work of Giorgione — another pupil of Bellini’s. The collaboration between Giorgione and Titian significantly shaped Titian’s style, particularly in his tonal approach to landscape painting.

The Renaissance master’s early paintings were often intimate in scale and deliberate in composition. As Titian honed his skills, his brushwork became more expressive, a signature that characterises the pictures of his later years. Titian’s work spans a wide range of subjects, contributing to all of the major areas of Renaissance art. He painted altarpieces, portraits, mythologies, religious scenes and pastoral landscapes.

During his lifetime, Titian enjoyed a highly successful career, with many prestigious commissions. He produced numerous portraits, including those of Emperor Charles V and Pope Paul III, which elevated him to the status of a premier court painter. Portraits by Titian are known for their psychological insight, capturing not only the physical likeness of his subjects but also their inner lives.

Titian died in 1576 of the plague that raged in Venice. Today, many of Titian’s works are housed in prestigious collections worldwide, such as the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, the National Gallery in London, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston and more.
