Born in 1930 in Wendorf, Germany, Uecker’s early experiences of World War II informed a lifelong fascination with physical labour, symbolism and the poetic resonance of everyday materials. The artist studied painting at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee, before fleeing East Germany for the West and continuing his studies under Otto Pangkok at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
During the 1950s, Uecker developed an interest in meditative practices and in the philosophies of Buddhism, Taoism and Islam. This led him to create his own ritualistic practice within his art through his nail reliefs. The process also signified protection to the artist, who remembered nailing planks over his windows to deter Soviet troops after World War II. These nail relief works were used by Uecker to explore ideas of light, shadow and rhythm.
In 1961, Uecker joined fellow artists Heinz Mack and Otto Piene as founding members of Zero — a collective which used light, colour and movement to create a visual language based on science and a poetic existentialism. Together, the artists produced immersive light salons in Amsterdam and Paris, contributing to a broader European dialogue around Optical and Kinetic Art.
After Zero disbanded in 1966, Uecker’s work evolved into other fields, such as Conceptual Art, Land Art and designing opera sets. His public works include From Darkness to Light (1978) at the United Nations and the Prayer Room (1998–1999) at the Reichstag in Berlin. Of his work, the artist once said, ‘My objects are spatial realities, zones of light. I use mechanical means in order to overcome the subjective gesture, to objectify it and to create the situation of freedom.’
Uecker produced one of his final nail relief series, Shields, in 2022, noting that he viewed this work as a poetic prayer of hope. The artist died a few years later in 2025. His works have appeared in international collections such as Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. During his lifetime, Uecker also featured in major exhibitions, including the 1970 Venice Biennale and a retrospective at Kunstsammlung NRW, Düsseldorf in 2015.
