Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo

Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo was one of the leading Venetian painters, printmakers and draughtsmen of the 18th century. Renowned for his lively genre scenes and masterful drawings, he developed a distinctive artistic voice while working in the shadow of his father — the celebrated Rococo master Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.

Born in Venice, Italy in 1727, Domenico trained in his father's prolific workshop, assisting on some of the most ambitious fresco cycles of the period. Together they executed major commissions across Europe, including the decoration of the Würzburg Residence in Germany and the Royal Palace of Madrid, where Domenico refined his technical mastery and compositional skill. Following his father's death in 1770, he returned to Venice and established an independent style, favouring everyday scenes alongside religious subjects and mythological narratives.

Domenico is particularly celebrated for his remarkable series of drawings depicting the adventures of Punchinello, the mischievous figure from the Italian commedia dell'arte. These inventive compositions combine fantasy with social commentary, revealing his fascination with storytelling and the changing cultural landscape of late 18th-century Venice. Seven ink drawings from the series sold for more than £4 million combined at Christie’s in 2019.

Alongside his drawings, Domenico painted portraits and vignettes of Venetian life, celebrated for their expressive colour and fluid brushwork. He bridged the exuberance of the Rococo with the more introspective artistic currents that followed, securing his place among the most original artists of the late Venetian school. Domenico died in 1804.
