Celine

Founded in 1945, Celine has become synonymous with quiet luxury. The brand began as a children’s shoe shop at 52 rue Malte in Paris, opened by Céline Vipiana — an origin still reflected in the house’s precision, craftsmanship and attention to proportion.

By the early 1960s, Celine had expanded into women’s footwear and sportswear, which was soon followed by handbags, accessories and fragrance. Celine’s distinction came from restraint: elegant, functional pieces designed to move with the wearer, not overpower them. By the 1970s, the brand had established a global retail presence.

In 1996, Celine joined LVMH. After Vipiana’s death in 1997, Michael Kors became the house’s first creative director, sharpening its identity with polished, pragmatic design. Phoebe Philo then redefined Celine with her minimalist approach when she joined the house in 2008. She distilled the brand into clean lines, precise tailoring and a neutral palette, sharing, ‘I worked hard to create things that stand the test of time.’

Her tenure produced some of Celine’s most iconic bags, including the Luggage Tote, Trapeze and Cabas. One of her most popular designs for the house was the Classic Box Bag, with its elegant lines and subtle hardware — a Pink Lizard Classic Box Bag with silver hardware achieved HKD$40,000 when sold at Christie’s in 2018.

When Hedi Slimane took over in 2018, he rebranded the house, removing the accent from its original incarnation, Céline. He pivoted the designs towards a sharper, youth-driven, Parisian rock aesthetic. One of the first collections he introduced included the Celine 16, a top-handle bag that paid homage to the address of the house's headquarters in Paris. Other much-loved handbag designs from Slimane include the Triomphe and C Bag, which reflect his more logo-focused and vintage aesthetic. Following Slimane’s departure in 2024, Michael Rider joined the house, with Celine continuing to craft staples of modern, everyday elegance.
