Anna Weyant

Known as one of the art world’s most exciting contemporary painters, Anna Weyant was born in 1995 in Calgary, Canada. Weyant’s work explores themes of adolescence, femininity and the complexities of the human psyche. Her art reflects a deep understanding of classical painting techniques rippled with a modern sense of unease and dark humour of the everyday.

Graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2017, Weyant’s influences are wide-ranging and diverse, from the 17th-century Dutch Golden Age painters Frans Hals and Gerrit van Honthorst to contemporary artists such as John Currin, Lisa Yuskavage, Will Cotton and Ellen Berkenblit, and even fairy tales and New Yorker cartoons. The composition of Loose Screw(2020), sold at Christie’s in 2022 for US$1,500,000, was inspired by an Otto Dix painting Woman With a Red Hat (1921), and the lyrics are from Eminem’s ‘The Real Slim Shady’, but the ingenious flair for subtle intrigue and absolutely photorealist execution are pure Anna Weyant.

Weyant’s distinct style is encapsulated in her ability to blend realism with surrealism, apparent in her depiction of young women in various states of contemplation or distress and the unconventional objects in her still lifes. This unique approach has earned her a dedicated following and critical acclaim in the art world.

In addition to her paintings, Weyant is also known for her drawings and prints. Her ability to convey deep emotion and intricate detail in these mediums has garnered her a significant following on social media platforms like Instagram, where she shares glimpses of her creative process and finished works.

With a unique voice and a compelling vision, Anna Weyant is undoubtedly a name to watch in the world of contemporary art.
