Adam Fuss

Adam Fuss’s photographs document the ethereal majesty of the natural world. The British photographer is known for his experimental work with camera-less photography with the use of daguerreotype and photograms — a contemporary reinterpretation of the medium’s earliest techniques.

Fuss was born in 1961 in London and grew up in rural England. Since the 1980s, Fuss has experimented the process of image-making that transcend traditional photography. His early works often involved using long exposures and pinhole cameras, but he became best known for his work with photograms — images created by placing objects directly onto photographic paper and exposing them to light. This method allowed Fuss to create hauntingly beautiful, often ghostly images without the use of a camera.

The evocative and poetic photographs by Fuss explore themes of life, death and the passage of time. His celebrated series ‘My Ghost’, which he began in 1994, embodies his distinctive photographic style. Often rendered in large scale, the series features ghostly representations of water, smoke and christening gowns.

Adam Fuss’s art often draws upon nature, childhood memories and metaphysical questions, reflecting on his deep engagement with the symbolic and spiritual. Another notable series, ‘Home and the World’, reflects Fuss’ exploration of memory and personal history, bringing together themes of innocence and experience. He also incorporated snakes into his works, drawn to their symbolic associations with transformation and rebirth.

Fuss has exhibited widely, and his works belong in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
