On 11 and 13 May Christie’s South Kensington will hold a two-day sale of Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art comprising around 600 lots. Spanning over 3000 years of Chinese art, from the Neolithic period to the early 1900s, this carefully curated auction features porcelain, jade carvings, Buddhist art, textiles and scholars’ objects.

Highlights include a 19th century celadon jade-inset zitan ruyi sceptre, a 50-lot collection of wood scholars’ objects to be offered without reserve and an exquisite pale celadon jade ‘horse and monkey’ group from the Qianlong period (1736–1795) from a private American collection.

Our 13 May sale also features a group of early Buddhist wood figures from the Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties, rarely seen on the market. One of the most striking examples is a 17th century seated Buddha with a beautiful face and downcast eyes.
