Rectangular box, the lid set with a glazed grisaille on parchment miniature heightened with flesh-tones depicting of a young couple at a bearded print dealer's stand, the shameless gallant explaining to his innocent fiancée a dirty print of two curious girls lifting the hat of a sleeping gentleman in order to appreciate his attributes, the box with sober gold mounts, push-piece and lining

The miniature on the present box is a precious document as, due to the initial of the signature, it is possible to identify its author as Louis-Nicolas Van Blarenberghe (1716-1794), known as "le grand Van Blarenberghe" (see Serge Grandjean et alii, The James A. de Rothschild Collection at Waddesdon Manor. Gold Boxes and Miniatures of the Eighteenth Century, Fribourg, 1975, pp. 232-249).
The goldsmith, Catherine-Adélaïde Duponnois, called veuve Leferre, struck her mark in 1822 and specialised in "la garniture de tabatière" such as in the present case.
