J. Richard Schwager (1822-1880) was one of the most prominent exponents of the Viennese School of miniaturists in the 19th Century. Leo R. Schidlof (La miniature en Europe, Graz, 1964, II, p. 758) points out that due to his ability in painting children, as one can see in the present example, he became one of the favorite miniaturists of the Viennese aristocracy.
