The members of the Croisière Noire reached Fort Lamy, the capital of Chad, in December 1924. A brilliant portraitist, Iacovleff was fascinated by the body mutilations and modifications practiced by a number of Africans. The scarification seen in this drawing, raised scars produced by incision in decorative patterns, was both for aesthetic effect and to indicate status or membership of a particular ethnic group.
