The Lobi region of Upper Volta, of which Gaoua was more or less the centre, was, for a long time, considered invulnerable by the African empire. The animist Lobi were thus able to preserve their ancestral customs.

In an unpublished typescript, Randonnée en A.O.F., the artist describes her visit to Gaoua in 1938. 'Here are the Lobi, the most beautiful black race imaginable. Above all, the men, tall and handsome, are magnificent. Very manly, these warriors are always warring, or in vendetta, with the neighbours... The men, their bows and arrows always at hand, wear the skin of a monkey or a wild cat casually thrown over the shoulders, three or four leather belts around the waist, cowrie shells on the ankles, gold earrings, a piece of material or a ponytail behind.'
