Mambour had already developed his highly personal style before travelling to Africa in 1923, but it was crystallised by this six month visit. He made numerous drawings during his journey up the Congo River from Boma-Matadi to Stanleyville, and then on to the Upper Congo and the Kasai. See Jacques Parisse, Auguste Mambour, une oeuvre, un destin, Brussels, Fernand Nathan - Editions Labor, 1984. The drawing here was later lithographed.
