Probably commissioned by a collector of the artist's work.

In this composition, one can see members of various ethnic groups from the Belgian Congo. On the left, sitting on a stool, is a Mangbetu woman from the Uele; the chief with a feather headdress and a necklace made of teeth, is from the Lomami, in the Kasai province, like the red dancer in the background. The seated woman with a pointed, studded headdress, is a Kutu woman from Upper Tschuapa in the Equateur province, while the woman wearing a headscarf is from the Lower Congo.
We are grateful to Christian Devred-Hallet for her assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
