IN THE 18TH CENTURY A NEW VARIATION OF DIAMOND ENGRAVING WAS DEVELOPED; THE STIPPLE-ENGRAVING. IT FLOURISHED IN THE NORTHERN NETHERLANDS, ESPECIALLY IN DORDRECHT AND THE HAGUE, WHERE FRANS GREENWOOD (1680-1763), AART SCHOUMAN (1710-1792) AND GILLES HENDRICUS HOLAART (1731-1816) WORKED. BEFORE THIS PERIOD THIS METHOD WAS NOT COMPLETELY UNKNOWN JUDGING FROM THE FEW SURVIVING GLASSES OF ANNA ROEMERS VISSER (1583-1651). THE POPULARITY OF STIPPLE-ENGRAVING IN THE NETHERLANDS WAS MAINLY DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE GOBLETS WERE GIVEN AS PERSONAL GIFTS TO FRIENDS OF THE CLIENTS. AS A RESULT THE GREATER PUBLIC WAS RELATIVELY UNAWARE OF THIS FORM OF DECORATION, WHICH WAS EXPENSIVE AS WELL, BECAUSE STIPPLE-ENGRAVING WAS A TIME-CONSUMING PROCEDURE. BY THE END OF THE 18TH CENTURY THE TRADITION OF GLASS ENGRAVING FELL INTO DISUSE ONLY TO REVIVE AGAIN IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY.

JACOBUS VAN DEN BLIJK (1736-1792) WAS A SILVERSMITH IN DORDRECHT AND WAS POSSIBLY FAMILIAR WITH THE WORK OF THE MENTIONED ENGRAVERS. THE STIPPLES IN HIS WORK ARE SOMETIMES MIXED WITH FINE LINES, WHICH DOES NOT GIVE HIS WORK A STRONG IMPRESSION WHEN COMPARED TO THE WORK OF HIS PREDECESSORS. THERE ARE FREQUENTLY DARK RINGS AROUND THE EYES. THE SUBJECTS ARE MAINLY HUMAN, AND CHERUBS AND PUTTI ARE REPRESENTED IN CONNECTION WITH BEST WISHES. THREE-QUARTERS OF HIS SUBJECTS ARE COMPLETED WITH AN INSCRIPTION OR A BANDEROL IN A SHORT, VERY GOOD AND CRISP LETTERING.
