Chen's maturity as an artist is clearly revealed in her still life compositions of the late 60's and early 70s. The meticulously arranged composition, the refined use of perspective, the excellent draughtsmanship and the fine handling of colours allow the artist to reproduce the textural quality of her objects with extraordinary verisimilitude. More striking is the artist analytical representation of the scene before her. Her deep understanding of the relationships among the displayed items gives a profound complexity to an outwardly simplistic picture.
