SANDYS, George. A Relation of a journey begun An. Dom. 1610. Four bookes containing a description of the Turkish Empire, of Aegypt, of the Holy Land, of the remote parts of Italy, and islands adjoyning. London: for W. Barrett, 1621.
Small 2° (282 x 181mm). Engraved architectural title by Francis Delaram. Double-page engraved map of the Mediterranean, small double-page engraved view of the Sultan's seraglio. Engraved illustrations in the letterpress, several full page, many after Natale Bonifacio. (Gatherings C-E with large worm-trace at lower margin, M1 with clean tear affecting last 4 lines of text.) 18th-century speckled calf, spine gilt in compartments with moroco lettering-piece in one and crest of a seal surmounted by a coronet in the remainder (recased, joints slightly cracked and repaired at head, small worm-traces to lower cover), red sprinkled edges. Provenance: "William Walker, E. College: Div. Joh: Bapt: Oxon. 1720" (ownership inscription to title).
Second edition. George Sandys (1578-1644) left England in 1610 on an extended foreign tour. This account of his travels, first published in 1615, at once became popular. Izaak Walton noted in his Compleat Angler Sandys's allusion to the pigeon-carrier services between Aleppo and Babylon. Milton's "Ode on the Passion" was inspired by the fervent verse which Sandys wrote after a visit to the Holy Sepulchre at Jerusalem. An extract from his book appeared in Purchas's Pilgrimes, 1625, part II, and his accounts of both Africa and the Holy Land figure in John Harris's Navigantium et Itinerantium Bibliotheca, 1705. Blackmer 1484; STC 21727.
