Lot Essay

In 1917, Steichen volunteered and was given the rank of first lieutenant in the Army Signal Corps. He arrived in France in July 1917, a day after the death of Rodin. Steichen remained and worked for the Army, overseeing their aerial photography, until late 1919, when he retired as Lt. Colonel.
