According to Kauffman's accounts a version of the present work, in which the landscape was executed by Philip Hackaert, was commissioned for Count Rossomersky and was paid for by Mr. Santini on June 17, 1789 (56 Zecchini).

On the basis photographs, Dr. Bettina Baumgrtel of the Kunstmuseum Dsseldorf im Ehrenhof and Professor Wendy Wassyng Roworth confirm that the present painting is consistent with Kauffman's style and that the artist treated this subject on numerous occassions.
