The present watercolour shows Ram Singh (1827-1866) probably accompanied by Charles Aeneas Burton, Bt. (1812-1857) who was Captain and later Major in the 40th Native Infantry. Burton was a political agent at Kotah or Harrowtee from 1846-1847, where he was killed in his residence on the banks of the Chambal during the mutiny.
Kota was an independent state until after Independence when it was intergrated into Rajasthan.
The court of Kotah was created in 1631 when there was a partitioning of Bundi. The Kotah artists soon evolved their own unique tradition which was renowned for its hunting scenes. The Kotah school blends the Mughal tradition of animal portraiture with traditional Rajasthani styles creating particularly dynamic and vibrant paintings.
