Serfoji (1799-1830), was the last Maharaja of Tanjore. Jerry Losty suggests that the present watercolour, by a Tanjore artist, is possibly influenced by the works of Anna Tonelli (c. 1763-1846). Born Anna Nistri, the daughter of a miniaturist settled in Florence, she taught drawing to the children of the second Lord Clive (created Earl of Powis in 1804) by whom she was employed as a governess in London and India (1794-1802). Works by Tonelli can be seen in Powis Castle.
