Lot Essay

The present work is an illustration to Kathleen Ni-Houlihan by James Clarence Mangan and was reproduced in A Broadside, No.1 in June 1914. William Butler Yeats, the artist's brother, wrote a one-act play entitled Cathleen Ni Houlihan for Maud Gonne, an actress to whom he twice and unsuccessfully proposed marriage.
