The present drawings have traditionally been attributed to John Vardy and are thought to have been executed as designs for firegrates at Hackwood. An entry on Vardy's bill for the account at Hackwood reads '...& a Drawing for the 2 large Grates in the Great Room, attending and Directing Mr Chamberlain about the same'. Vardy was employed by the Duke of Bolton to design not only the improvements to the buildings but also the decoration and furnishings inside the house.
