It is probable that this commode was executed by the Brussels ébéniste Jean-Joseph Chapuis (1765-1864) rather than his contemporary Claude Chapuis, who was active in Paris at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th Century. These ébénistes are often confused as they worked in the same style and used virtually the same stamp. The oeuvre of Jean-Joseph was, however, more varied and generally of a larger scale than that of Claude.

Jean-Joseph established his first workshop in Brussels in 1798. In 1806 he was called to value French furniture at the château de Laeken and thereafter supplied furniture for the château himself.
