A Swiss vari-colour gold snuff-box
probably Geneva, circa 1840
Oblong, the cover inset with a glazed oval miniature depicting Tsar Nicolas I wearing the sash of St. Andrew by Winberg, within chased raised gold frame, the cover, sides and base decorated with panels of engine-turning edged by bands of trailing foliage and flowers on a matted ground, the base centred by an oval reserve chased with geometric scrolling foliage, the four side panels decorated with vertical stripes, the bombé left and right-hand sides with chased oblong reserves, with slightly raised wavy thumbpiece, struck with incuse Z and S
3½in. (8.9cm.) long
Jwan Winberg worked mainly in Russia where he was associate of the Academy of St. Petersburg in 1830 and member 1846, and a miniature painter to the court of Russia. He was a good miniaturist using pink colourings and brown-red shadows, and giving particualr care and attention to the clothes.
