Of spade shape, cleverly carved to a single white band around the body with a half-flowerhead pattern suggesting a cloth, the agate of attractive toffee colour with darker bands above and below the white band, the shoulders delicatley cut with low relief lion-mask handles-- 2 3/16in. This bottle bears comparison with another banded agate, probably from the Imperial Palace workshops in Beijing illustrated by Hugh Moss, Victor Graham and Ka Bo Tsang, The Art of the Chinese Snuff Bottle, The J & J Collection, Hong Kong, 1993, p. 265, pl. 166. Though our example is not carved with the band of lotus petals around the base, it is similar in many other respects.
