QIANLONG SEAL MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

Finely and delicately painted and enamelled with eight roundels, each containing two chrysanthemum heads, interspersed with formal sprays of scrolling lotus all between underglaze-blue ruyi lappets around the foot and shoulder centred with iron-red and yellow dots--4 3/8in. (11.2cm.) high

Compare a Qianlong-marked pair of jars in the Tianjin Arts Museum, included in the Exhibition of Chinese Treasures of 5000 Years, Japan, 1985, Catalogue no. 46; and another in the the National Palace Museum, Taibei, included in the Illustrated Catalogue of Ch'ing Dynasty Porcelain, pl. 24.

The origin of this design dates to the Chenghua period, an example with chrysanthemum medallions and butterflies is illustrated in Chugoku Toji Zenshu, vol. 21, pl. 1
