A Spanish bone chess set of pulpit type, late 18th or early 19th century
stained dark brown and natural, the royal pieces carved with stiff-leaf galleries below crowns, with cruciform finials to the kings, and stepped concentric disc finials to the queens, the bishops similarly modelled with stiff-leaves below mitre finials, the knights with horses' heads, the rooks of turret form, with spire finials terminating in ball knops, the pawns of slender baluster form, with cone-shaped finials, all on circular bases, restorations, king -- 3½in. (8.7cm) high, pawn -- 2½in. (6.2cm) high
