Details
A Rare German Gothic Gauntlet
Circa 1490, probably Innsbruck
For the left hand, originally forming part of a complete vambrace, with elbow-length cuff covering the outside of the forearm only, the rear edge cut out for the elbow joint and bordered by a narrow turn, linked by four articulated lames to a broad metacarpal plate with V-shaped embossed gores at the bases of the knuckles, continued on a finger base-plate linked to it by a narrow plate with strongly embossed ridges over the knuckles (main finger-plates missing), hinged thumb-defence (incomplete), decorated with engraved lines, and with domed rivets throughout; with a modern copy of the matching right gauntlet
13in. (33cm.) long
For a discussion of gauntlets of this type, which were particularly popular with the Innsbruck workshops, see Ian Eaves & T. Richardson, 'The Treytz Armour of Gaudenz von Matsch at Schloss Churburg', J.A.A.S., Royal Armouries Special Issue, 1990, pp. 15-17 (2)
