Lot Essay

The present figure is a copy of one of the six celebrated 'Danseuses' or Danaids, excavated in the Villa de Papyri at Herculaneum in 1738. This example is featured in the catalogue of J. Chuirazzi & Fils, fig.N.28. A set of five life-size bronze copies by Chuirazzi formed part of the Bute Collection, sold in Christie's Great Rooms, 3 July 1996, lots 5, 6 & 7.
