A hire-purchase payment book for an electric guitar issued by the Liverpool musical instrument store Frank Hessy Ltd., 62 Stanley Street, Liverpool and 20 Manchester Street, Liverpool 1, the inside cover inscribed in blue biro in an unidentified hand with the date of issue:June 30th, 1960 account and customer details:A/c No. E235..Mr Paul McCartney, 20 Forthlin Rd, Liverpol, 18 for the total amount of 21 at a monthly rent of 10[shillings] for a Red Solid - Elec. Gtr , the book containing nine receipts issued between June 30th, 1960 and January 21st, 1961 for various sums ranging from a minimum sum of 10 shillings to the highest sum of /p5, the latter paid in December 1960, payment for the guitar being received in full on January 21st, 1961

It is interesting to note that this the hire-purchase arrangement began at the end of June following The Beatles' first 'professional' engagement on June 2nd, 1960 and preceding their first trip to Hamburg on August 16th, 1960. It would appear that one payment was made in August [perhaps on Paul's behalf by a member of his family] and then payment resumed at the end of November, 1960 as the first of the Beatles' sojourns in Hamburg came to a close - presumably by this time McCartney had managed to put some money to one side to pay for this guitar.
