This microscope was bought by Dame Sheila Sherlock in 1937 in Edinburgh, and was used by her whilst an undergraduate at Edinburgh University, and during her pioneering studies on the use of liver biopsy in the diagnosis of liver disease. The holder of many Honourary Doctorates worldwide, she was awarded the Fothergillian Gold Medal of the Medical Society of London in 1983 and the Gold Medal of the British Medical Association in 1985. The lot is sold with a letter of provenance.
