This work is typical of de Laszlo's wartime portraits. It is effectively a snapshot in oil, probably painted in one session prior to the sitter's departure to the front.
George Granville, K.T., P.C. (formerly Marquess of Stafford) succeeded his father in 1913. He was honorary Colonel of the 4/5th Seaforth Highlanders, and Lieutenant in the Dragoons and Lovat Scout Yeomanry, President of the Air League, Vice-President of the Royal Aero Club and President of the Navy League from 1922-24.
He was Lord High Commander to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland from 1921-23 and represented the Colonies in the House of Lords in 1922.
From 1928-29 he held the post of Under-Secretary of State for War and Vice-President of the Army Council. He was Lord Steward of the Household, 1936-37, and carried the Orb at the Coronation of H.M. King George VI in 1937.
For his actions in the First World War he was awarded the Order of the Crown in Italy.
