The Somersault Bear brought action into children's nurseries. On November 14, 1908, the mechanism of the new bear was registered under patent number DRGM 359595. Numerous hours had been spent on the devlopement of the latest Steiff bear after Otto Steiff had discovered a French made mechanical bear presented as a 'Parisian Novelty' in a London toy store. "We must have something like this in our programme", he wrote to the product developement Department in Giengen. His request met with immediate response and Hugo Steiff invented a sturdy wind-up mechanism using the arms of the bear as a 'wind-up key' for the clockwork movement. In addition to the teddy bear, the mechanism was also installed in a monkey and an elephant.
