Autograph letter signed ("James Nasmyth") to I. K. Brunel, 3 pages, 4to, Patricroft, April 9th, 1845.
"I feel very sincerely obliged and indebted to you for the carefull consideration you have bestowed on my steam vacuum system -- which altho' in the present condition has failed to satisfy you on the grand point of comparitive Economy. I still hope that you may be the first and great friend to its being put on the trial. I am the more anxious on this hand as I feel so confident that under your sanction it would be certain to have a fair trial ... I still hope that you may feel warranted in recommending it to the attention of the board."
Creased on folds, some marginal tears.

Nasmyth was the inventor of the steam hammer used by Brunel in his ship the Great Western. He also established the Bridgwater foundary which supplied much of the pipe for the South Devon Railway for which Brunel was the engineer at this time.
