SIR GEORGE GREY (1799-1882)
Autograph letter signed ("Grey"), to I. K. Brunel, 7 pages, 8vo., Colonial Office, Feb 8/51.
Grey is replying to a memorandum from Brunel regarding a railway through Canada "Respecting the projected railway through the N. American Provinces -- The suggestions it contains are very important but upon discussing the matter further with Mr. Howe I find that there would probably be much more objection on the part of the authorities in Nova Scotia to this plan than I had apprehended." He goes onto explain the objections "the plan of the Nova Scotia Government ... is to borrow 800,000/p on the revenue of the Promise, with or without our guarantee & to employ this money in constructing that part of the projected railway which passes through Nova Scotia as a Govt. undertaking."

Lansdowne writes in response to a letter from Brunel, to arrange a meeting in Bristol. "I shall in consequence settle to go to Bristol on tuesday by the train which goes thro' Chippenham between 11 & 12."
